Company profile

L'Épicier Pasquier is one of the largest independent food retailers in Quebec. They are a flagship merchandiser who pride themselves on creativity and innovation, offering their customers a boutique style "one stop shopping" experience second to none.

The Pasquier tradition was founded in Henryville, Qc. on April 14th, 1960 by Mr. Viateur Paquette a native of Saint-Sebastien. From their father's humble beginnings as a small town Boucher, the Paquette family has built a retail food company that includes a state of the art meat packaging plant as well as a 150,000 sq ft retail store.

Business situation

The retail merchandising business is extremely competitive, especially in Quebec where large banners such as Sobey's, Metro and Loblaws dominate the landscape. L'Épicier Pasquier is constantly in search of new ways to enhance the merchandising appeal of their store and to attract more customers. Controlling costs is another key ingredient to running a successful business; especially one where profit margins can be razor thin. The challenge then becomes how to decrease your costs while enhancing the overall appeal of your merchandising. The answers to this question can only be realized by completing a systematic review of all the major cost components.

Technical situation

Approximately 50% of the total energy consumption in a retail Supermarket is consumed by the refrigeration equipment (compressors and lighting). Refrigeration lighting alone represents 12-13% of the annual expenditure. Traditional fluorescent tubes are extremely inefficient in cold environments losing up to 40% (T8) of their luminous output at -23C. Further, their lifespan is significantly reduced and they dissipate additional heat forcing the compressor to work harder to keep the case cool (industry estimates up to 25% more).

Frozen meat discoloration and environmental concerns were also identified as major concerns for L'Épicier Pasquier. Fluorescent tubes contain Mercury and emit Ultra-violet (UV) light which changes the color of the meat (from red to brown) in their vertical freezer cases. As a result of this discoloration, they were forced to sell the meat at a discount. Given that they also own a meat packaging plant, this was a critical business issue.

These facts coupled with the high maintenance costs of replacing inefficient fluorescent tubes in their vertical freezers lead them to seek out a more efficient and robust Refrigeration lighting solution

Solution

To solve L'Épicier Pasquier's energy consumption, meat discoloration issues, and environmental concerns, Posilight proposed to replace all the inefficient Fluorescent refrigeration lighting with solid state LED lighting solutions. Posilight LED Refrigeration lighting solutions are highly efficient in cold zones operating at peak efficiency down to -40C with an average lifespan of approximately 50,000 hours (9.7 yrs at 14 hrs/day) and contain no hazardous metals such as the Mercury and lead found in fluorescent tubes. Further, there is very little heat and no UV light emitted from LED's so they don't work against the compressor or discolor frozen meat products.

In the Horizontal cases, F32T8 (32W) fluorescents tubes were replaced with a combination of Legacy 2e (16W) Canopy fixtures and Legacy e (8W) shelf lighting fixtures resulting in a net savings of 66.7% for an average case (2 canopy tubes & 4 shelves). For the vertical freezers, the F40T8 (40W) fluorescent tubes were replaced with the Posilight vertical case combo of Legacy V & Legacy VC (center mullion) fixtures consuming a total of 20W/door Vs 80W for the fluorescent tubes resulting in an energy savings of 75%.
Pasquier were so impressed with the result, they decided to expand the original proposal to include several of their specialty cases used for higher end products like sea food, fresh red meat, pastries, cheese and nuts.
